02 Июля 2016

You can meet ordinary black ant at every step, for example, in a flower bed, in a garden, a grove or orchard. There are times when they crawl into the house to find their food. Ants live everywhere, so adults and children are familiar with them. Watching how they work is not only interesting, but also informative.

Lasius Niger ants have such characteristics as fertility, intelligence and adaptability, because they can live in any conditions. In one colony there may be a different number of ants, sometimes the family reaches 10,000 individuals. It is interesting that in each family adhered strictly to the hierarchy, so insects carefully guard the queen, are constantly at war with other colonies and grow their offspring.

How does a garden ant look like?

A common ant can be of different sizes. On average, its length is from 3 to 7 mm, and miniature insects are no longer than 1 mm. Queen of the ant family can reach 1 cm or more.

Typically, the ants of this species have a black, red or dark brown color, and a body covered with small hairs. A thin waist separates the chest area from the abdomen, and on the head one of the main virtues is strong mandibles. Each insect has 3 pairs of legs, antennae on the head and a curved body shape

How do garden ants develop?

The ant larva resembles a worm that moves little and has a white color. The quality, usefulness and quantity of food taken depends on who the larva will be ─ an ordinary worker ant or queen. The whole process of feeding is controlled by adult insects. Males appear from unfertilized eggs, and females from fertilized eggs.

In nests, the larvae become cocoons, from which the newborn ants cannot themselves get out, so the caring adult members of the family help it. The insects of workers also have babysitters who take care of the new offspring. They gnaw through the cocoon of the larva, thereby helping them to see the light.

Each anthill consists of several levels. At the lowest level, the larvae become cocoons, and young individuals are born there. Older ants are digging labyrinths and all kinds of passages, thanks to which the anthill is ventilated, as well as humidified.
